Ted Levin and Erin Donahue, of Daybreak fame for their weekly trail cam feature, celebrate the wildlife that live in our woods. This talk took place at the Howe Library in Hanover, NH, on March 10th, 2026. Erin Donahue, of East Thetford, has been a psychotherapist for forty years, and a wildlife photographer for the last twenty. Ted Levin is a lifelong naturalist whose work has appeared in many magazines and has written numerous books, including America's Snake: The Rise and Fall of the Timber Rattlesnake (2016), and his most recent, The Promise of Sunrise.
Trail Cams and The Promise of Sunrise
The Dartmouth Organic Farm hosts a variety of research projects and opportunities for experiential learning. Laura Braasch, Assistant Director for Experiential Learning, introduces the farm. Dr. Theresa Ong, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies, combines theory with empirical work in agricultural systems to understand how complex interactions between the environment, organisms and people ultimately influence food production and ecosystem stability. Dr. Carl Renshaw, Professor of Earth Sciences, investigates how simple soil amendments can enhance carbon sequestration in agricultural lands. This talk took place at the Howe Library in Hanover, NH, on February 5th, 2026, and was co-sponsored by the Howe Library and the Hanover Conservancy.
Research at the Dartmouth Organic Farm
In this interactive comedy show, Valley Improv makes up funny scenes and original stories on the spot using suggestions from the audience. Nothing is prepared beforehand! Expect quick thinking, big laughs, plenty of surprises, and a lot of heart. The show is family-friendly and suitable for all ages. This performance took place on February 28, 2026, at the Howe Library in Hanover, NH. Valley Improv is an improvisational comedy troupe that has been creating original, unscripted comedy for all audiences throughout the Upper Valley of NH and VT since 2008.

Local beekeeper, Jennifer Mercer gives an introduction to beekeeping. Covering a year of getting started with a hive and what to expect. She also provides suggestions to gardeners on what to plant to support pollinators. Jennifer Mercer is a third generation beekeeper and a Cornell Certified Master Beekeeper and is committed to following best practices to maintain the health and wellbeing of her bees at Black Dog Bees & Maple Trees in Lebanon, NH.  This program took place at the Howe Library, in Hanover, NH on 1/21/2026.
An Introduction to Beekeeping
Antarctic ice loss is a critical yet insufficiently understood contributor to global sea-level rise. Although Antarctica is dominated by extreme atmospheric cold, intrusions of warm deep water can melt ice from below, accelerating ice discharge into the ocean. In this talk, I will provide: (1) a brief overview of Antarctic ice and the Southern Ocean; (2) why the ocean plays a central role in determining the fate of Antarctic ice; and (3) a discussion of potential future changes. I will also share perspectives from polar expeditions aboard icebreakers and consider what modern science can learn from early 20th-century exploratory voyages. Yoshihiro Nakayama is an Assistant Professor of Engineering at Dartmouth College. He received his Ph.D. in Natural Science from the Universität Bremen in Germany. Before moving to the U.S., he worked at the Institute of Low Temperature Science at Hokkaido University in Japan. His research aims to understand the rapidly changing polar oceans and ice sheets by integrating observational data with state-of-the-art numerical modeling.
Antarctic Ocean Research: Why Antarctica is Losing Ice
The Trump administration is using tariffs - taxes imposed on imported goods - to achieve all manner of goals, from reducing the trade deficit to creating jobs to generating revenue for the federal government. Will the policy work? This talk took place at Howe Library, in Hanover, NH on 12/9/2025. Douglas Irwin is John French Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College. He is the author of Clashing over Commerce: A History of U.S. Trade Policy (University of Chicago Press, 2017), which The Economist and Foreign Affairs selected as one of their Best Books of the Year. He is president-elect of the Economic History Association (2022-23). He is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He worked on trade policy issues while on the staff of President Ronald Reagan's Council of Economic Advisers and later worked in the International Finance Division at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, D.C. Before joining Dartmouth, Irwin taught at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business.
What's the Deal With Tariffs?
Join David Millstone, Upper Valley dance caller extraordinaire, for a talk on English country dance through Jane Austen's day. This talk took place via Zoom, hosted by the Howe Library in Hanover, NH on December 2, 2025. David Millstone fell in love with English country dance at Pinewoods Camp in 1987; he has been leading ECD for the past thirty years, including a monthly dance in Norwich, VT. A staff member at dance camps around the country and in Europe, he was president of Country Dance and Song Society for six years. A Visiting Scholar in the Music Department at Dartmouth, he has written and presented extensively on different aspects of country dance history.
Dancing with Jane Austen
Annual Meeting of the Hanover, NH Historical Society followed by a talk on the Literary History of New Hampshire by Dr. Mary Kronenwetter. New Hampshire is home to a rich and diverse literary heritage. Some well-respected New Hampshire authors include Cecelia Thaxter, Robert Frost, Grace Metalious, John Irving, Donald Hall, J.D. Salinger, and Jodi Picoult. Dr. Mary Kronenwetter is a New Hampshire Humanities Scholar and has served as a museum educator at Historic Deerfield, The John Hay Estate at The Fells, and the Enfield Shaker Museum. She holds a doctorate in education and has taught at colleges in the United States, China, and Japan. Mary has authored a New England-based historical novel entitled Pauper Auction. This talk was sponsored by the Hanover Historical Society and the Howe Library and took place on November 12th, 2025 at the Howe Library.
