Local author Courtney Floyd to discuses her debut fantasy novel, Higher Magic. Higher Magic is an incisive, irreverent, and whimsical cozy dark academia novel for fans of Heather Fawcett’s Emily Wilde series and R.F. Kuang’s Babel, a struggling mage student with intense anxiety must prove that classic literature contained magic—and learn to wield her own stories to change her institution for the better. Courtney Floyd grew up in New Mexico, where she learned to write between tarantula turf wars and apocalyptic dust storms. She currently lives at the bottom of a haunted mountain in the woods of Vermont with her partner and pets. Her debut fantasy novel, Higher Magic, was published by MIRA Books in October 2025. Courtney has a PhD in British Lit and a penchant for irreverent literary allusions. Her short fiction and poetry can be found in publications including Haven Spec, Small Wonders, and Fireside Magazine, and her cozy horror audio drama, The Way We Haunt Now, is available on all major podcast platforms. Mary Butow, New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (NHDHHS), and Tom Jarvela, Community Advocate, discuss radon in NH and what you can do to protect yourself and your family. Mary Butow is the Radon Program Manager with the NH Department of Health and Human Services (NH DHHS), where she oversees implementation of NH's State and Tribal Indoor Radon Grants (SIRG) program grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), including responding to community concerns and promoting testing and mitigation of radon. Tom Jarvela is a New Hampshire native living in Stratham with his wife and two young children. In 2021, his family discovered that their home in Stratham had very elevated levels of radon. Having remediated their own radon issues, he founded radonlibrary.com, an organization dedicated to working collaboratively with libraries to promote radon awareness in the granite state. Radon in NH: Test. Fix. Save a Life.
Samara Ayvazian-Hancock presents on the history of the book, charting its global spread and adaptations, before focusing on common problems books face and how you, as a home librarian, can take steps to protect the longevity of your own collection. Samara Ayvazian-Hancock is a graduate student at the Garman Art Conservation Department at SUNY Buffalo State University specializing in library and archive material. Samara is spending her final year of the program in the conservation lab at Dartmouth Libraries. Samara earned her BA in ancient, medieval, and modern history from Durham University, followed by a graduate diploma in book and library materials conservation from West Dean College. This program took place at the Howe Library on April 7th, 2026.
Books: Their History and Care
This is a thought-provoking conversation with Beth Malow and Doug Teschner, authors of Beyond the Politics of Contempt: Practical Steps to Build Positive Relationships in Divided Times. They believe that amid a climate of widespread contempt and even hatred for people who disagree politically, we can each make important contributions to better our lives, our relationships, and our country. They aim to find a way to turn the politics of fear and contempt into the politics of hope. Beth Malow is a neurologist and science/health communicator working in public health and climate change, and has given a TEDx talk, The Art of Communicating Science. She moderates workshops and debates for Braver Angels, the bipartisan non-profit grassroots organization focused on uniting Americans in our divided time. She’s appeared on NPR 1A and the PBS Newshour. Doug Teschner ran the Peace Corps in Ukraine and led a community education effort to end the Ebola epidemic in Guinea. Beyond the Politics of Contempt
Britton Mann DAOM, L.Ac. dives into the phenomenology, epistemology, diagnosis, and treatment of as seen in traditional east Asian medicine In Chinese medicine, the body’s channels (meridians) can be disrupted much like rivers, by factors such as aging, poor diet, illness, trauma, surgery, or emotional stress. When the flow of qi ("chi") and blood is impaired, pain and disease can arise. Chinese medicine restores circulation using tools such as acupuncture, herbs, diet, cupping, moxibustion, and qigong. Britton diagnoses the source of disruption and applies appropriate therapies to restore function. Medically bilingual, he integrates Chinese and Western perspectives and collaborates with physicians to provide patient-centered care. Britton Mann holds a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine - building on a lifelong interest in traditional Asian healing shaped by his studies at Williams College and a career that includes yoga teaching, bodywork, and extensive training in martial arts and yoga. He earned advanced degrees from the National University of Natural Medicine and the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, completed years in private practice with Dr. Haosheng Zhang, and is a board-certified, licensed practitioner, published researcher, and active member of the New Hampshire Acupuncture and Asian Medicine Association. Theory, Diagnosis, and Treatment in Traditional East Asian Medicine
Ted Levin and Erin Donahue, of Daybreak fame for their weekly trail cam feature, celebrate the wildlife that live in our woods. This talk took place at the Howe Library in Hanover, NH, on March 10th, 2026. Erin Donahue, of East Thetford, has been a psychotherapist for forty years, and a wildlife photographer for the last twenty. Ted Levin is a lifelong naturalist whose work has appeared in many magazines and has written numerous books, including America's Snake: The Rise and Fall of the Timber Rattlesnake (2016), and his most recent, The Promise of Sunrise.
Trail Cams and The Promise of Sunrise
The Dartmouth Organic Farm hosts a variety of research projects and opportunities for experiential learning. Laura Braasch, Assistant Director for Experiential Learning, introduces the farm. Dr. Theresa Ong, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies, combines theory with empirical work in agricultural systems to understand how complex interactions between the environment, organisms and people ultimately influence food production and ecosystem stability. Dr. Carl Renshaw, Professor of Earth Sciences, investigates how simple soil amendments can enhance carbon sequestration in agricultural lands. This talk took place at the Howe Library in Hanover, NH, on February 5th, 2026, and was co-sponsored by the Howe Library and the Hanover Conservancy.
Research at the Dartmouth Organic Farm
In this interactive comedy show, Valley Improv makes up funny scenes and original stories on the spot using suggestions from the audience. Nothing is prepared beforehand! Expect quick thinking, big laughs, plenty of surprises, and a lot of heart. The show is family-friendly and suitable for all ages. This performance took place on February 28, 2026, at the Howe Library in Hanover, NH. Valley Improv is an improvisational comedy troupe that has been creating original, unscripted comedy for all audiences throughout the Upper Valley of NH and VT since 2008.
