The award is sponsored by Library Journal and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Howe Library Mission Statement

Howe Library brings together people, resources and information to engage our minds and to strengthen connections to our community and the world.

The Howe Library mission statement was adopted by the Howe Library Board of Trustees on May 10, 2007 as part of the new long-range plan and was endorsed by the Hanover Board of Selectmen on June 25, 2007.

Howe Library Governance, Library Trustees and Corporation By-Laws

Howe Library is a partnership of the Howe Library Corporation and the Town of Hanover. From the founding of the library in 1900 until 1972, the Howe Corporation provided the operating funds. Over time, the Town also supported library services through appropriations at town meeting. In 1973, the taxpayers voted to assume responsibility for the operating budget for the library.

Today, the Howe Corporation and the Town are partners in leadership and financial roles. The Town funds 76% of the budget, paying for salaries, collections and building expenses. The Corporation supplies 24% through private contributions that pay for programming, collections and enhancements.

Trustees are elected by the membership of the Howe Library Corporation. The Trustees of the Howe Library Corporation generally meet on the second Thursday of each month.
