How do I get a library card? Hanover taxpayers, Dresden students and teachers, Hanover businesses and Hanover nonprofit organizations, and Dartmouth students qualify for a card that provides borrowing privileges at the Howe Library and the Hanover Town Library in Etna. The Hanover library card also provides access to reference databases that Howe Library subscribes to for library customers. The librarian at the circulation desk will issue a library card after proof of residency or property ownership is presented. Dartmouth students need to present a valid student ID card. See below for information on cards for Hanover businesses and nonprofit organizations. Non-residents may purchase a card, for an individual or a family, for 3 months for $35.00 or for a year for $110.00. The fee for non-resident senior citizens is $80.00 for the year. The non-resident fee card covers all regular library services with the exception of interlibrary loan. Please ask at the Reference Desk for more information about interlibrary loan. See the brochure titled About Nonresident Fees (PDF) We encourage patrons to carry their cards. The Howe Library will issue a special patron card to Hanover non-profit agencies and Hanover business owners in the name of the Director or CEO. That person is responsible for all items borrowed. Howe Library cards must be issued in the name of an individual, not a group, such as an agency name. However, the agency or business name will be attached to the record. This ensures accountability and equity for the Hanover taxpayer. Anyone using the Non-Profit Card or the Business Owner Card must present the card at the circulation desk in order to borrow. This ensures accurate patron records and protects against unauthorized use. It is the CEO or the Non-Profit Director's responsibility to be sure that the person who is loaned the card understands he/she must present the card at the library. The number of items borrowed on the card may not exceed 10 at any one time. To register or renew a card, the CEO or Non-Profit Director should contact the Office Manager or the staff at the Circulation Desk. Business CEOs, please provide proof of ownership such as sample of the letterhead for the business with the name of the owner. Non-Profit Directors, please provide a sample of the agency's letterhead with the name of the director. Cards are issued for one year and need to be renewed annually. Please telephone the Circulation Department (643-4120) or email (circulation@thehowe.org) if you have further questions. |
