“Nothing But Time: Films in New England Library Basements”

Our 2010 spring film series is devoted to encore screenings of some of the most memorable films that I have presented during the past 30 years in New England library basements - the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts (Cambridge), Currier Museum of Art (Manchester), Fiske Free Library (Claremont), Loew Auditorium-Hood Museum of Art, Pavilion Auditorium (Montpelier), Sawyer Free Library (Gloucester), and, of course, the Ciné Salon at the Howe Library. For reasons known only to each building’s planners and architects, such as Le Corbusier and Jose Luis Sert at Harvard, these subterranean refuges seem to be favored setting for “media rooms” that in turn have functioned as our ersatz art cinemas. —Bruce Posner

February 8: Poetic Documentaries by Cavalcanti and Posner

Rien que les heures, a classic of 1920s French cinema, was Brazilian filmmaker Alberto Cavalcanti’s city symphony of Paris from dawn until dusk including views of the beautiful and the ragged, the rich and the poor. “I Was There,” is comprised of 8mm camera rolls shot by Posner early in his development as an experimental filmmaker. Edited into three parts, the film attempts to capture the sensations felt by an American adolescence during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
