“Nothing But Time: Films in New England Library Basements”

Our 2010 spring film series is devoted to encore screenings of some of the most memorable films that I have presented during the past 30 years in New England library basements - the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts (Cambridge), Currier Museum of Art (Manchester), Fiske Free Library (Claremont), Loew Auditorium-Hood Museum of Art, Pavilion Auditorium (Montpelier), Sawyer Free Library (Gloucester), and, of course, the Ciné Salon at the Howe Library. For reasons known only to each building’s planners and architects, such as Le Corbusier and Jose Luis Sert at Harvard, these subterranean refuges seem to be favored setting for “media rooms” that in turn have functioned as our ersatz art cinemas. —Bruce Posner

March 22: In Person Artist Ria Blaas

Ria Blaas: My Father’s Home Movies
On a vintage small gauge movie projector, Vermont artist Blaas will present a selection of her father Jan Blaas’s home movies that by all accounts are a wonderful discovery.

“They cover the years 1958-65 at least the ones I'll show. One is called "playing in the street" as we lived in a Rotterdam suburb and a lot is filmed from the balcony. Another one is all about the inside of our little apartment… the family… all kind of home activities… all very Dutch. He was a carpenter but after contracting polio became an architect’s draftsman. Like so many young men during World War II, he had to work in Germany. There he drew portraits in exchange for cigarettes, and with the cigarettes he got food.

“These movies sort of shaped my childhood. Something I'd only came to realize looking at them after so many years. Was his movie-making a continuation of something more… something like art? He put a lot of effort into it.” —Ria Blaas
