Howe Library Governance

Howe Library is a partnership of the Howe Library Corporation and the Town of Hanover. From the founding of the library in 1900 until 1972, the Howe Corporation provided the operating funds. Over time, the Town also supported library services through appropriations at town meeting. In 1973, the taxpayers voted to assume responsibility for the operating budget for the library.

Today, the Howe Corporation and the Town are partners in leadership and financial roles. The Town funds 76% of the budget, paying salaries, collections and building expenses. The Corporation supplies 24% through private contributions that pay for programming, collections and enhancements.

Trustees are elected by the membership of the Howe Library Corporation. The Howe Library Corporation is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization whose sole purpose is to benefit the Howe Library.

CONSIDERING A CHARITABLE BEQUEST
TO THE HOWE LIBRARY CORPORATION?

You can make a gift to the Howe Library Corporation in your will and know your interests in literature, good reading, information and resources, and community gathering will continue to be supported. You may designate a specific dollar amount, a percentage of the estate, a percentage of the residual, a piece of property, or any other specified gift. These gifts are among the most personal and meaningful of all types of charitable giving, and they are fully deductible for federal estate tax purposes at the time of distribution.

You may make this decision at any time, and add it to your will the next time you update it. If you don't have a will written yet, or haven't revisited your will recently, this would be an excllent reason to update it. You then can reconsider it any time you rewrite or revise your will in the future.

Here is suggested language, which will be helpful to your attorney:
'I hereby give, devise and bequeath to The Howe Library Corporation, a corporation organized under the laws of the State of New Hampshire, ___dollars (or property, securities, etc.), to be used for the benefit of The Howe Library Corporation, in such a manner as the Board of Trustees thereof may direct.'

You may download a copy of our Planned Giving Brochure (PDF)* or you may request a copy from the library.

Call Mary White, Library Director (603-643-4120) if you would like more information about other planned giving opportunities.
